The City Council of Columbus, Ohio voted to ban harmful gay conversion therapy on Monday night, joining Cincinnati and Toledo which have already banned it.
LGBTQ activist groups like Stonewall Columbus worked with Kaleidoscope, Equality Ohio and other organizations for months to get the proposed law passed.
The Executive Director for Stonewall Columbus, Karla Rothan, says conversion therapy is happening in Columbus and the practice is hurtful. Rothan says council’s decision to ban it, is more protection for city youth.
“I think what it says is that, when you go to school and you identify as LGBTQ and you’re getting bullied every day, and nobody wants you, and nobody likes you and you’re getting a lot of harassment, and you may be even getting that at home that at least your city stands up for you,” Rothan said.
